Afraid You'll Never Fill That Difficult Position? Discover Upskilling From Your Candidate Pool

Posted by Mark Bohdanyk on July 12, 2021

Even with so many people on the market right now, it's difficult to find the right person.  Even moreso for highly specialized or cross-specialized individuals.  Because of a gap in skills, 87% of employers are currently having difficulty filling positions.

How can your company get the people you need and stay ahead of the competition?

The answer is a term you may not have heard before - upskilling.  The idea is that you take strong candidates who exemplify the traits you need in the position and train them for what you need them to do.  This takes both a time and monetary investment from the company, but allows you to develop the talent you need rather than continue to sit with open vacancies.

This is where profiling the job by you, your recruiting team or hiring partners becomes critical.  You can't upskill potential candidates if you don't understand the full scope of the job.

But in order for you to be successful in upskilling or reskilling from your candidate pool, your approach to hiring also has to change from the top to be more of a skills-based mindset.  Evaluation of candidates will need to be based on skill sets rather than work history.

Companies will spend extra money and resources to futureproof computers or facilities - will you do the same for your company's most valuable asset - it's employees?  This is the mindset many larger companies like Amazon and JP Morgan/Chase are taking, spending upwards of $700 million to upskill their employees.

This also means that structured learning has to be a part of your culture and language should you want to keep innovating towards success.  If your company can't afford structured learning, allow for designated blocks of time for study/upskilling to occur.

All of this ties full circle into profiling the job and developing a love letter job description written to the candidate you need, addressing the person and results you want to see in the position, rather than the standard bullet point list of demands found on every job description from here to the moon.
